Bessard & Mercier
Firm Manifesto

A firm built for the long term, substance, and silence.

Our clients come by referral. What we offer can be said in few words: patient counsel, exercised without haste, at the level of the decisions it informs.

The firm was founded in Geneva in 2024, following twenty years of independent practice. It unites two partners, one of counsel, one senior associate, and the small team that allows each case to be handled by the same hand from first to last day. This size is not a stage: it is a choice. We wanted a firm where one knows the name of one's clients, and where the client knows the name of their lawyer.

Our practice is dual. On one side, corporate law: acquisitions, structuring, shareholders' agreements, governance, shareholder disputes. On the other, private wealth: estates, trusts, fiduciary structures, tax planning, international succession. These two sides communicate constantly, and it is precisely at their junction that most decisions that matter in the life of a business owner or established family are taken.

Our method

The first meeting is without invoice. It serves to understand, to listen, and to say honestly whether we are the right address. If we are, we say so; if we are not, we refer. The loyalty of our clients over two decades owes as much to the cases we accepted as to those we declined.

We work in French, German, English and Italian. Our usual jurisdictions are French-speaking and German-speaking Switzerland, the European Union, the United Kingdom, the UAE, and several offshore centres. When a case requires local expertise we do not have, we mobilise a network of corresponding firms, patiently built, and coordinate from Geneva.

What is said here stays here. What is signed here holds.

— Motto of the Firm

Pro bono commitments

Each partner dedicates a defined volume of time each year to pro bono publico work, in areas where our expertise can have a decisive effect: protecting vulnerable persons in estate matters, defending cultural organisations established in Switzerland, and providing pro bono governance counsel to non-profit associations. We do not publicise these cases; they exist.

Professional associations

The partners and associates of the firm are members of the following bars and organisations: Geneva Bar Association (ODA), Swiss Bar Association (FSA), International Bar Association (IBA), Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP), International Society of Succession Law, International Fiscal Association.

A final note on what we do not do

We do not practise criminal law, divorce law, routine employment law, or tenant defence. We do not maintain a blog. We do not participate in paid rankings. We do not solicit mandates. All of this is deliberate, and reflects what we believe to be the proper measure of a firm of our focus.
